En kongelig affære

En kongelig affære

Review: Wow! That's really all I have to say about this Danish historical drama. It's beautifully executed, the acting is first rate and the story itself is gripping on many levels. I was going to say that if you only watch one costume drama this year, then let it be En kongelig affære, but I think I ought to say that if you only watch one film this year, then let it be this one. Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard and Alicia Vikander all blew me away. A masterpiece.

The Newsroom

I just watched the first episode of Aaron Sorkin's new show The Newsroom that premiered on HBO last week. It looks really promising and I'm sure I will keep following it for quite a while.

Being Flynn

Being Flynn

Review: Nice to see Robert De Niro actually use a bit of his talent again, instead of wasting it like he mostly have done the last 10 years. This movie, that is based on a memoir by Nick Flynn, is a warm story about a boy and his estranged father and their struggle to survive in a cold ruthless world. Well made and thoughtful, and with some great acting all around, especially impressed by Paul Dano. Beautiful soundtrack from Badly Drawn Boy.

Bindlestiffs

Bindlestiffs

Review: The reason why I, and most other people, decided to check out this film is because it's Kevin Smith's company SModcast Pictures first release. Having watched it now I can only ask: Why Kevin?! This was worse than bad, this was like the lamest kind of amateur film making. Not to be recommended.

Albert Nobbs

Albert Nobbs

Review: Albert Nobbs is a really warm and beautiful movie taking place in Dublin in the late 19th century. Albert Nobbs, played by Glenn Close, is a woman who the majority of her life has pretended to be a man until one day when she sees an opportunity to live a different life. Some really nice acting in the movie, and especially by Close.

Prometheus

Prometheus

Review: When I first heard of Prometheus I must say that I was a bit discouraged. First off all I wasn't sure about a new Alien movie, but the majority of my sceptisism had to do with the fact that Noomi Rapace would play one of the main characters. Never been a fan of her as an actress even if it's nice to see a fellow Swede getting some big roles now. But now I finally got around to watching it and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't a fantastic film, but it was well made and quite a joy for the eye to watch. Easy entertainment at it's best. Noomi also did better than expected, even if her accent makes me cringe a bit.

God Bless America

God Bless America

Review: Ahh! Just the kind of movie that I was in the mood for right now. A dark and cynical comedy about Frank and Roxy and their violent killing spree cleansing the world of bad people. I loved it! A definite must see.

La piel que habito

La piel que habito

Review: The latest film from Pedro Almodóvar is a dark, thoughtful and frightening piece that probably won't attract the weak hearted. But if you, like me, already is a fan of his work I'm sure you will enjoy this one to the fullest. Not one of his best, but still definitely worth watching.

Dallas

I just had to watch the 2 first episodes of the new season of Dallas. And after watching them I can understand even less why they revived this old classic show.

Louis Theroux - Twilight of the Porn Stars

15 years ago Louis Theroux made a documentary about the porn industry. Now he's back to revisit some of the people he met then as well as looking closer at an industry in decline. As always when it comes to Louis, you get warm, quite heartfelt moments that show the humanity in people. If you like his earlier work, you're bound to like this one.

Jeff, Who Lives at Home

Review: Charming movie from the people behind The Puffy Chair and Baghead. Not quite a feelgood movie as much as a feel kind of good movie. Nice acting from Jason Segel and Ed Helms.

Game of Thrones Season 2

Just finished watching the last episode of the second season of Game of Thrones. I must admit that I liked this season better than the first one, but it's still not very good. But then again, tits and swords are always nice. We'll see if I will bother to see the third season though.

War of the Dead

War of the Dead

Review: Kind of like Band of Brothers. But with zombies, bad actors and a lame storyline. So in other means, not at all like Band of Brothers. But did I mention there are zombies?

John Carter

John Carter

Review: In the age when comic book movies is the big thing, it was only a matter of time before someone tried to breath life into Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter. Exactly 100 years since his debut, Disney makes the movie about him. And as always when it comes to Disney it all gets a bit too family oriented for my taste. I remember reading John Carter as a kid, and I remember never being a big fan. I'm not a big fan of this movie either.

Safe House

Safe House

Review: High paced action movie featuring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds. Denzel is always good and Ryan is often quite boring. It is one of those movies where you get exactly what you're looking for. Ideal movie for a lazy day at home.

Coriolanus

Review: I love my Shakespeare. The language, the storytelling, the edge. Sometimes modern adoptations of his works manages to add another layer to his timeless prose. That's not the case with Coriolanus unfortunately though. It just feels contrived and is a real hit and miss if you ask me. This is one of those movies that seem better or paper than in reality. A shame.

Man on a Ledge

Man on a Ledge

Review: An ok action thriller that has an interesting premise, but unfortunately it fails when it comes to the acting which is no more than subpar. But at least it delivers what it says, there is a man on a ledge in it.

Carnage

Carnage

Review: This movie was a true delight to watch. Perhaps not as much for the storyline itself, but for the incredible actors playing it out. It is like a great tennis match between two great acting teams, and it's a joy to watch them doing what they do best.

Cowboys & Aliens

Cowboys & Aliens

Review: For some reason I decided to see this movie. Don't really know why since I don't like Western films, and I think that Harrison Ford is an incredibly overrated actor. But then again, aliens in a movie can always be fun. But this film wasn't fun, it was 2 hours of yawning and deep sighs. Will trust my initial instinct more often and stay away from things like this.

Chronicle

Chronicle

Review: First off. Nothing bores me more than movies where one of the protagonists are filming most of what we see. It was so many years ago since that technique felt fresh or even slightly interesting. With that being said though, Chronicle is an ok sci-fi about some regular teens getting super powers and their struggle against the dark side of it all. Bad acting though.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Review: Martha Marcy May Marlene is a really strong film about a young woman who suffers from paranoia and delusions after returning to her family after being with an destructive cult. Elizabeth Olsen is superb in the role Martha and the way that the director has done the movie, with short flashbacks to the time in the cult and with no simple answers, is just beautiful. A true joy to watch.
