Movies 2016

2016 have been a slow year when it comes to movies for me. Why? Not sure. Been busy with other things I guess. So, have there been any really good ones, and which ones have been the worst? Well, it was the year for Deadpool which I really loved. And I guess I would put The Revenant, The Danish Girl and Pride amongst my favourites too. The worst? Well, Special CorrespondentsThe Forest and Yoga Hosers were definitely amongst the worst of them.

Yoga Hosers

Yoga Hosers

Review: Ok Kevin Smith, I've now officially given up on you as a film maker. This movie is beyond bad. It's beyond words. It's...

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Review: A quite decent version of the 60's television series. Nothing special, but slightly better than expected.

The Magnificent Seven

The Magnificent Seven

Review: This remake of the classic film from 1960 was really not that bad. Entertaining and a fun watch.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

Review: As a big fan of Harry Potter, I had to see this prequel to the series. There is something really special about J.K. Rowling's magic world and this film has that special feel too. Totally worth watching if you, like me, go for that kind of films.

David Brent: Life on the Road

David Brent: Life on the Road

Review: I'm a big fan of The Office, so when I heard that David Brent would be back I knew that I wanted to see it. The awkwardness from the series is there for sure. And the humour. But there is something about it that don't really do it for me. I can't put my finger on exactly why?

13TH

13TH

Review: This documentary by Ava DuVernay is a must-see! It focuses on race in the American justice system, and it's a tragic story.

Review: You know that you will get action watching any of the Mission: Impossible flicks. Was this a good one? Decent.

Kronjuvelerna

Kronjuvelerna

Review: Some great acting saves this quite weak attempt at making a film with the magic of films like Big Fish.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Review: I quite enjoyed this little tale. Nice effects, entertaining story and good acting overall. Too bad though that the worst acting was by the lead character. Actor Asa Butterfield was boring as fuck! Good movie though.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange

Review: I do love Marvel flicks. And if they feature two of my favourite actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Mads Mikkelsen, you know I really liked Doctor Strange. Nuff said.

The Art of Organized Noize

Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad

Review: When I first heard of this film I was both looking forward to it, and at the same time not. It seemed cool, but it was also a DC flick, and DC seldoms succeeds doing good movies. Some cool characters, but all in all it lived up to the DC standard. Which means it wasn't very good.

Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler

Man vs Snake: The Long and Twisted Tale of Nibbler

Review: A documentary about players trying to accumulate a billion points on the arcade game Nibbler. Sounds nerdy? Yes it is. Did I enjoy it? Yes I did.

Rating: 6.5/10

The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young

The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young

Review: I loved this documentary about this ultramarathon race in Tennessee. Its lovely characters, the trail itself and the quirky admission fees. Totally worth watching!

The Wolfpack

The Wolfpack

An Open Secret

My Sister's Keeper

My Sister's Keeper

Review: I enjoyed this drama about a family where one of the children is born just in order to save her sister's life. It sounds really soapy, but is saved by some great acting all around.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead

Review: Can't say that I'm into the modern EDM scene, but I felt like checking out this documentary about one of the big names in the scene. I have to say that Steve Aoki comes out like kind of a cool and down to earth kind of guys. Still sceptical about the music though.

The Intern

The Intern

Review: This film is highly predictable, and I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch it. Kind of glad that I did though. Mainly because of the acting from both Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway. DeNiro is doing one of his best performances in quite a long time. A charming piece of work

Simon och ekarna

Simon och ekarna

Review: I have never got around to read Marianne Fredrikssons novel Simon och ekarna, even though I have heard a lot of good about it. Now after finally watching the movie version of it, I just have to read it. Why? Because the film was really good, and the books are usually better than the film version of it.

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond

Review: I really do love Star Trek. And I dug this latest installment. The only critique might be that these last movies feel more and more like typical Hollywood actions flicks, and not great Star Trek work. Fun, but a bit weird, to hear Fight the Power by Public Enemy in the movie btw.

The Inbetweeners 2

The Inbetweeners 2

Review: After putting it off for years, I have finally looked through the complete series of The Inbetweeners. I really enjoyed it to begin with, but quite soon it got a bit too repetitive and silly. I felt I had to see this film though to complete it all. And yes, silly is the word.

Rating: 4.5/10

Ghostheads

Ghostheads

Review: Ghostheads is a documentary about the devoted fans of the Ghostbusters movies. An ok watch, but it just feels like one of many documentaries like this that try to say that they are the most dedicated fan base of all out there.

I Am Thor

I Am Thor

Review: I have a slight visual memory of the band Thor from back in the 80's, but I can't remember if I actually heard them or not. This documentary about the struggles of Jon Miki Thor to reach the level of fame and stardom that he feels he deserves is a warm and at the same time sad tale. I liked it.

The Fundamentals of Caring

The Fundamentals of Caring

Review: There's nothing new about this kind of story. And the acting isn't brilliant in any way. It is however charming and warm enough to put a smile on my lips. That's good enough in my book most of the time.

Time is Illmatic

Time is Illmatic

Review: One of the best hip hop albums of all time is, and will always be, Illmatic by Nas. I loved it when it came out in 1994 and I still do. This is the documentary about the life of Nas and the creation of that album. Definitely worth checking out.

Rating: 6.5/10

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse

Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War

Review: I wasn't super impressed when the first Captain America movie came out. I've always thought of the Cap as too much of a goody two shoes to be really interesting. But that has changed through out the different Marvel movies that he's been a part of, and Captain America: Civil War is a really good film. I dug it!

Chuck Norris vs. Communism

Chuck Norris vs. Communism

Review: Interesting documentary about how in communist Romania, thousands of Western films on bootleg VHS tapes — mostly Hollywood action movies  — were smuggled behind the Iron Curtain, opening a window into the free world. Worth checking out as an historical document.

Rating: 5.5/10

Special Correspondents

Special Correspondents

Review: I love Ricky Gervais as a comedian. When he's trying to be a proper actor however, he always fall a bit short. Special Correspondents is a remake of the French movie Envoyés très spéciaux. I haven't seen the original, but I kind of hoping that it's better than this version at least. Because Ricky's version is no good.

Rating: 4/10

Team Foxcatcher

Team Foxcatcher

Review: A really well-made documentary about Team Foxcatcher and the tragedies that surrounded it. No matter if you've seen the film Foxcatcher or not, I think you might find this documentary worth watching.

Rating: 6.5/10

Where to Invade Next

Where to Invade Next

Review: Michael Moore's films are always entertaining, and that also goes for Where to Invade Next. His films are always a bit too easily digested too to be honest, so you feel that it's only lightweight entertainment. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing.

Rating: 6.5/10

Daft Punk Unchained

Daft Punk Unchained

Dope

Dope

Review: I honestly don't really know what to think of this film. It's flirtation with the 90's is really charming, and the soundtrack is awesome. It's comedy is however also just as lame as a lot in this genre back in the 90's. Not wasted time watching it, but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone.

Hail, Caesar!

Hail, Caesar!

Review: The pleasure of sitting down to watch a new film by Joel & Ethan Coen! You know you're in for a ride, and you know that you will watch something different. Their films are usually tricky to explain in a short text, but that's not what they are meant for. They are meant to be watched and enjoyed. Like how I enjoyed Hail, Ceasar!
